GROUP DESCRIPTIONS
The Colorado Ice Wizards is one, blended team comprised of three groups. Once players are steady on their skates, have the basics of skating and hockey, they move to our Independent Skater Group. We do not divide into "A,B, or C" level teams.
Superstar (Beginner) Group The Superstar Group is a designed to introduce new skaters to skating and hockey. Players will get used to hockey equipment, get steady on their skates, begin to master the mechanics of skating, get familiar with a hockey stick and the basics of handling it. Some of our players will move quickly through this group, and others will take a while, laying a solid foundation before they move on. Bridge Group The Bridge Group is designed for players to improve their skating and hockey skills, and if needed, to mature physically and/or emotionally before moving to the Independent Skaters. Like the Superstars, some players move quickly through this group. Others will take more time, laying a solid foundation before they move on. Players work on skating fundamentals (forward, backward, crossovers, stopping) and stick and puck fundamentals (stickhandling, passing, shooting). Players also work on “team concepts:” Knowing their teammates, good sportsmanship, being ready to be on the ice on time, putting on their own equipment, following and participating in drills and participating for an entire practice. Independent Skaters The Independent Skaters Group is for players who are steady on their skates and have begun to master the fundamentals of hockey. This group continues to work on skating and hockey fundamentals. Speed and conditioning work are added. Players work on concepts such as defensive and offensive play, positioning and team play. Players are expected to demonstrate and lead drills for their teammates. Independent Skaters have a range of abilities. While we may have some ability-based instruction, all are a part of the group. Players of differing abilities will find themselves on the ice at the same time. Everyone gets equal ice time, and while we work to improve skills, we provide everyone with a rewarding and fun experience. |
